Why did I get a late fee?

(For renters)

Your landlord can set up Cozy to automatically apply a late fee if your rent payment has not started processing by a certain date.

A late fee is applied anytime there's an outstanding balance on the ledger after the grace period ends. For example, if rent is due on the 1st, and your landlord has a late fee to be added "3 days after rent is due," the late fee would be applied on the 4th day if a payment is not In-Progress at this time.

You can check to see if your landlord has set up a late fee in your rent collection by going to your Payments tab, then click  Rental Details to view this section:

If you do receive a late fee, below is an example of what the late fee will look like on your Payments page:

How do I avoid having a late fee applied?

If your Current Balance shows any amount above $0 (in orange) on the date rent is due, you can send a payment before the grace period is over to avoid a late fee.

Cozy will also email you to let you know that you need to schedule a payment before the grace period is over if you show a balance due on your due date.

How will I know if I receive a late fee?

We'll send you an email to let you know that a late fee has been added.

How do I pay a late fee?

If you receive a late fee, this will not automatically debit your bank account or card. You can make a one-time payment to pay for the late fee at any time.

What happens if I don't pay the late fee?

You could continue to have additional late fees applied every month after the grace period if you have a running unpaid balance (shown in orange under Current Balance).

How do I get this late fee removed?

Landlords are the only users that can remove a late fee from the ledger, so we recommend that you reach out to them directly if you have any questions.

If you've paid your landlord directly for rent outside of Cozy, your landlord will want to record your Offline Payment to the ledger, and then they can remove the late fee.
